Innovation, Research and Technology Advancing Neurorehabilitation at the Institut Guttmann Technical Symposia
Nearly two hundred professionals attended the 37th Institut Guttmann Technical Symposia, held in conjunction with the institution’s 60th anniversary. The symposia provided a forum for learning and reflection on how emerging technologies such as neuromodulation, artificial intelligence, brain-computer interfaces, and robotics are transforming clinical practice and redefining the very concept of rehabilitation.
Dr. Montserrat Bernabeu, Co-Director of the Institut Guttmann, opened the event, entitled “Re-Moving Minds: Neurotechnology Applied to Rehabilitation.” The program featured top-level international speakers, including Prof. Armin Curt (University of Zurich), Dr. Joan Camprodon (Massachusetts General Hospital), and Dr. José Luis Pons (Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Chicago).
Throughout the day, participants addressed topics such as translational research in spinal cord injury, personalized neuromodulation, intelligent robotics, and technology integration in neurorehabilitation, as well as innovative startups already revolutionizing neurorehabilitation and neuroscience. Professionals from the Institut Guttmann also contributed, including Drs. Hatice Kumru, Sergiu Albu, Raúl Pelayo, Dolors Soler, Cristian Figueroa, and Narda Murillo, together with Eloy Opisso, Director of Innovation, and Javier Solana, Director of Research.
The audience actively engaged with questions and reflections at the end of each session, demonstrating the importance of this forum for sharing knowledge and fostering dialogue among professionals from diverse disciplines within the field of neurorehabilitation.
The symposia concluded with a keynote lecture by Dr. Josep Maria Martorell, former Associate Director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and member of the Board of Trustees of the Fundació Institut Guttmann, on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in science and medicine, followed by the closing remarks by Dr. Núria Montserrat, Minister of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia.
With over three decades of history, the Institut Guttmann Technical Symposium has become a leading scientific and professional event in the field of neurorehabilitation. Since its inception, it has brought together specialists from multiple disciplines to share knowledge, promote applied research, and foster innovation in the treatment of people with neurological disabilities.
This 37th edition reaffirms the Institut Guttmann’s commitment to knowledge transfer and scientific progress in the service of health, inclusion, and human potential.
