Josep M. Ramírez, director of the Institut Guttmann; Jordi Portabella, director of the Research and Knowledge Area of the Obra Social “la Caixa”; Álvaro Pascual-Leone, scientific director of the project and Antoni Andreu, Health Research director of the Generalitat de Catalunya have presented today the Barcelona Brain Health Initiative (BBHI) at the Institut Guttmann.

The project, with the support of Obra Social “la Caixa”, aims to deepen the knowledge of indicators and mechanisms that help maintain the health of our brain throughout life, including areas such as physical exercise, nutrition, cognitive training, sleep or socialization.

Neurological diseases are a growing problem that has become one of the major public health problems in developed countries and one of the most important challenges of biomedical research in the 21st century. Brain health is key to enjoy more and better life, maintaining healthy brain is essential to optimize our intellectual potential and to achieve a good quality of life. With this project, Barcelona Brain Health Initiative, the Institut Guttmann aims to discover what we can do to keep the brain healthy throughout life, and it has the methodological support of Harvard-Catalyst of Harvard Medical School.

The research study, which will need 3,000 healthy volunteers between the ages of 40 and 65, will identify, with scientific rigor, the indicators that allow to evaluate the state of people brain health and lifestyles that it is important to promote. The project has the participation of renowned ambassadors of the public life of the world of sports, cooking, knowledge, culture and the media, like Ferran Adrià, Carme Ruscalleda, Joel Joan, Nora Navas; Àlex Corretja, Pedro Martínez de la Rosa, Mònica Terribas, Jordi Basté, Josep Cuní and the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, among others.
