Humanized management and the value of people at the Institut Guttmann Technical Symposia

The Àgora of Guttmann Barcelona hosted yesterday the XXXV edition of the Technical Symposia of the Institut Guttmann, where experts in neurorehabilitation, XPA methodology, humanization and management contributed knowledge, ideas and good practices to humanize management in and health care in healthcare organizations.

After the institutional welcome by Dra. Bernabeu, Xavier Marcet, expert in management, innovation and business strategy gave the inaugural conference on humanistic management in which he remarked that leading is having influence and that organizations must have many professionals who lead with humility. "Organizations work better if they do it as ecosystems and not ego systems".

Next, there were two presentations, one given by Anna Sant, Sociologist and certified in Patient Experience by the Beryl Institute, and another by Dr. Joan Escarrabill, responsible for the implementation of the Patient Experience Evaluation at the Barcelona Hospital Clínic.

The last block of the morning was a round table, moderated by Elena Hernández, Head of Nursing at the Institut Guttmann. A table with Mr. Albert Cortés, Director of the HUGES project for the humanization of healthcare management, and Dr. Joan Vidal, doctor at the Institut Guttmann who presented the "Manual of good practices for Humanization in spinal cord injury" based on 9 strategic lines and carried out from multidisciplinary experience.

Then it was the turn of Dr. Álvar Agustí, a doctor at the Hospital Clínic and former patient of the Institut Guttmann, and  Ms. Joana Tamburini, who explained her experience as a mother and partner of two patients with acquired brain damage.

During the afternoon, methodological workshops were held with Andrea Santamaria, Athenea Solutions consultant and Certified in Patient Experience by the Beryl Institute, and Blanca Cegarra, responsible for Patient Experience at the Institut Guttmann. Mr. Hernan Cancio, scientific director of ANTAE, taught communication skills for professionals who work with pain and that we must change attitudes since he claims that we tend to avoid suffering. The last speaker at the Conference, Tayra Velasco, nurse and member of the HU CI Project, emphasized that in accompanying the illness we must show respect and empathy and avoid messages that invalidate the sick person.
