After suffering a spinal cord injury at cervical level while snowboarding, at the age of 18 I saw myself as a person who was totally dependent on others for everything, such as dressing, showering, eating or going to the toilet. Everything was a hard slog. After having achieved minimal progress in one month and fifteen days at the Hospital Vall d’Hebron, we requested a transfer to the Institut Guttmann.
At the Institut Guttmann I learned to deal with my situation and to realise how to take advantage of my capacities that were gradually improving thanks to my daily efforts in rehabilitation where I worked on my hands, my trunk, my legs... practically my whole body. I gradually got my independence back. I started to shower and dress alone, to eat, to play sports... I learned to get in the car, to drive again...
I’m back to being myself, back to enjoying myself, going out; in short, living again. The Institut Guttmann has helped me to become independent again. Today I have a full and completely autonomous life thanks to my family, friends and the whole Guttmann team.
