25 years of collaboration between TMB and Fundació Institut Guttmann

At he Universitat metro station, we celebrated 25 years of collaboration with Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), an agreement that, since 2000, has been essential in promoting accessibility to public transport and strengthening the functional rehabilitation process for people with neurological injuries.

The president of TMB, Ms. Laia Bonet, emphasized that this partnership has been key to identifying and resolving physical barriers on buses and the metro, and also to promoting a more inclusive mobility model. Thanks to this collaboration, TMB launched its corporate volunteering program, which is now fully established.

The co-directors of the Institut Guttmann, Montserrat Bernabeu and Montse Caldés, underscored the importance of working on rehabilitation outside the hospital setting, integrating the use of public transport as a real and meaningful activity for patients. They also emphasized that personal mobility is a key element in guaranteeing autonomy, access to leisure, employment, and full participation in society, in line with our mission and the organization's values.

Finally, Mr. Laureano Quer, a TMB volunteer who has collaborated with this initiative since its inception, highlighted in his speech the work carried out over these 25 years and, especially, the work of the Institut Guttmann in the rehabilitation process and in promoting autonomy.

Over this quarter-century, more than 500 solidarity mobility services have been provided, with more than 2,000 hours of TMB volunteering dedicated to facilitating transportation and autonomy workshops:

  • 450 bus services, with guided trips for more than 3,600 patients.
  • 72 autonomy workshops on the metro since 2011, with 576 participants.

This long-term collaboration aligns with the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, particularly Article 9, which upholds the right to accessibility on an equal basis with others. This shared commitment stems from the understanding that inclusive mobility is essential to makig progress towards a fairer and more accessible society for all.
