The Fundación Institut Guttmann is a private, social-initiative, non-denominational, not-for-profit entity driven by Catalan civil society and an effective example of public–private cooperation. It is registered with the number 189 in the Register of Private Foundations of the Department of Justice of the Generalitat de Catalunya (regional government - Government of Catalonia).
Since its establishment in 1962 by Guillermo González Gilbey, Juan Antonio Andreu Bufill and Luís Gil de Biedma Alba, the statutes set out the objectives and operation of the foundation.
“The Institut Guttmann is a non-profit organization, and its main objective is to promote, encourage and ensure full rehabilitation of people affected by spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury or other neurological disabilities, to develop research and teaching in the field of neuroscience, and to give them support and more convenient services to achieve a satisfactory social reintegration while contributing to the full recognition of their rights and effective equalising of opportunities.”

The Board is the highest body of government, administration and representation of the Fundació Institut Guttmann. It is a collegial body composed of a minimum of seven and a maximum of sixteen people, of which up to ten are appointed in their personal capacity, four designated by the following institutions: Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia), Fundación ONCE (ONCE Foundation), City of Barcelona and City of Badalona; and the remaining two are the holders of the Chair and Vice Chair of the “Social Participation Council of the Institut Guttmann”.
The Fundació Institut Guttmann, CIF number G-08519100, is a social-initiative entity, registered under number 189 in the Register of Private Foundations of the Department of Justice of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia). Classified as a care charity since 1965, it is included in the entities benefiting from patronage in accordance with Law 49/2002, of 23 December, on the tax regimen for non-profit entities and tax incentives for patronage.
The “Institut Guttmann - Neurorehabilitation Hospital” is part of the Sistema Nacional de Salud (National Health System)–SISCAT, is accredited as a referral hospital for the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and also as a National Reference Centre (CSUR) for the treatment of complex spinal cord injury by the Ministerio de Sanidad, Servicios Sociales e Igualdad (Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality). It is accredited as a University Institute attached to the UAB by Decree 230/2001 of the Generalitat of Catalonia, having begun its teaching activities in 1999 through a cooperation agreement with the UAB Doctoral and Postgraduate School.
The Ïnstitut Guttmann is registered under number H08000723 in the Registro de Centros y Servicios Sanitarios (Register of Centres, and Health Services) of the Department of Health, and the number E01024 in the Registro de Entidades, Servicios y Establecimientos Sociales (Register of Entities, Services and Social Institutions) of the Departamento de Bienestar Social y Familia (Department of Social Welfare and Family). Guttmann Servicios Integrales a Domicilio (Guttmann Home Comprehensive Services) is registered under number U0898244T in the Registro de Centros, Servicios y Establecimientos Sanitarios (Register of Centres, Services and Health Institutions) of the Departamento de Salud (Department of Health), and under number S05565 as a Social Attention Institution in the Registo de Entidades, Servicios y Establecimientos Sociales (Register of Entities, Services and Social Institutions) of the Departamento de Trabajo, Bienestar Social y Familia (Department of Social Welfare and Family).
