A group of patients of the Institut Guttmann joined the last 19th May a workshop in the Apple Shop at the Shopping Centre “La Maquinista” (Barcelona). They were accompanied by their families and an Occupational Therapist of the Institut Guttmann, in order to test different accessibility tools of Apple products.
As University Institute of Neurorehabilitation attached to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), mission of Guttmann Institute is to develop academic, scientific and research issues in neuroscience in general as well as in neurorehabilitation and technology applied to personal autonomy in particular.
On Thursday 5th May is celebrated the international Hand Hygiene Day, motivated by the World Health Organization since 2009. The celebration has the objective of educating and involving health professionals and hospital managers in prevention of healthcare associated infections. The simple and efficient measure of Hand Hygiene could prevent this kind of infections and despite it is a responsibility of health professionals, it is also important the commitment and the participation of patients and their families.
The Institut Guttmann, as a social initiative entity has demonstrated, during its 50 years of history, a big commitment with society and with the promotion, advocacy and effective equalisation of opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Furthermore, as stated on its Mission, Vision and Values, the organization maintain a legal, honest, ethic, and responsible behavior, and now it goes one step further, acquiring a new commitment with the United Nations, through the signature in the Global Compact.
“It is on schoolyard games where more exclusion is detected”
The Institut Guttmann has organized on 27th and 28th April a new edition of “Move and…you’ll see!” the inclusive physical education journey that have the objective of the inclusion of children with disabilities at the ordinary school.
Last Sunday 24th April, more than 40 patients, children and adults, and their families, all of them accompanied by a group of professionals of the hospital, participated on the athletic race La Milla, in Barcelona. The objective was enjoying sport and also demonstrating that people with disabilities could practice sport in an inclusive way.
Tuesday April 19 Institut Guttmann received the visit of Mr. Mateu, president of RACC and Mr. Antonio Gil, director of Communication and Institutional Relations of RACC who first visited the hospital facilities with the aim of establishing lines of collaboration and strengthen ties between the two institutions.
The Institut Guttmann is already preparing the next edition of its Technical Conferences, that will be dedicated this year to the topic “Neurophsycology and school: Learning disorder”. The Conferences are a essential meeting place to share knowledge, and also to discover the latest innovations on neurorehabilitation.
A young quadriplegic regain control of a hand because of a neural bypass with a chip on his brain that sends signals to muscles that control the movement. This is a step further on a research in what also the Institut Guttmann is working, with projects like Brainable, WAY and BNCI 2020.
The Institut Guttmann received Saturday the "Mussol de l'Any" (Owl of the Year) Award from the City of Sant Quirze del Valles in its 24th edition. The awards, organized by the Ateneo St. Quirze and the City Hall reward institutions or individuals who stand out for their intelligence and/or philosophy, qualities given to the owl, symbol of the town that takes protagonism during these days with a high number of events organized.
