New Center Guttmann - La Sagrera

“A proposal for an option to live an autonomous, inclusive, independent, active and quality life, and the creation of an advanced neurorehabilitation centre”

In accordance with the mission of the Institut Guttmann and its history of 50 years' experience in the integral treatment of people with neurological injuries, the “New Meridiana project” emerges with a double purpose:

First, to cover the needs of people with a major disability, who need the help of others for their daily activities and could benefit from a supervised apartment service with specialised services, enabling them to develop, for themselves, a normalising and reasonably achievable project of independent life. A need that the main Associacions de Persones amb Discapacitat Física de Catalunya integrades en el Consell Social (Associations of People with Physical Disabilities of Catalonia integrated into the Social Participation Council) integrated of the Institut Guttmann have helped us to identify.

And on the other hand, the opportunity to extend our expertise in the field of neurorehabilitation to other areas of neuroscience, such as dementia, mental health, child development disorders etc., through innovative and quality programmes that facilitate the integral treatment of these neurological problems.

The “Guttmann - La Sagrera” Building

Located in the heart of Barcelona, in the neighbourhood of La Sagrera, the “New Meridiana project” is a clinical-residential complex that will have 50 apartments for independent living and a Personalised Clinical Neuroscience Institute that, in addition to a spacious gym, will have the most advanced technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological problems and specialist neurorehabilitation.

The 14,500 m² architectural project is supervised by the Albert Vitaller architectural firm and involves the construction of five floors above ground of approximately 8,000 m². In the upper four floors, with a combined area of nearly 5,000 m², fifty independent- living apartments, spacious and properly equipped for wheelchair movement, will be built, fully designed for people with reduced mobility and featuring the latest ad hoc domotic solutions. In addition, there will be communal areas with services, a lounge, meeting space and laundry and more.

Between the ground floor and the mezzanine, an area of over 3,000 m², there will be the neuroclinic specialising in neurorehabilitation with spaces for outpatient consultations, specialist rooms for diagnosis and specialised treatments, and a spacious gym and accessible therapy pool.

The building will also feature a terrace café open to the public, which will provide catering to the independent living apartments should they so wish. The first level below ground will be dedicated in part to the neuroclinic, especially dedicated to the diagnostic imaging and day surgery as well as the various services necessary for the normal operation of the building and its facilities. The second and third levels below ground will be used for parking.

The URVAs (Residential Units for Independent Living)

Residential Units for Independent Living, specifically designed to facilitate autonomous and independent life of their residents, are mainly aimed at people with a physical disability, but also at older people with mobility problems or who want this type of residential mode. These apartments, as an element of social innovation, will have a personalised system to provide additional support services to enhance the functional autonomy of their users, as well as their comfort and security.

Its residents will be able to rent apartments on a permanent or temporary basis, which will allow its use also for those who, coming from other areas, receive the specialised medical care they need at the hospital in Badalona, or directly at the neuroclinic located in the same building. They will also be very useful for hospital patients who, after the intensive rehabilitation phase, want to follow a gradual process of social reintegration through such specialised resources; and for those who, despite being already reinserted at home, want to experience the option to live autonomously as a first step to developing a more personal project of independent living. It is certainly an opportunity for young people with severe mobility limitations who want to start a new phase of their life away from the family home.

L'Institut de Neurociència Clínica Personalitzada de Barcelona® (The Barcelona Institute of Personalised Clinical Neuroscience)

This is a highly innovative clinical-care project in Spain, which aims to provide all currently available means for better and more effective diagnosis and specialised treatment of neurological illnesses in a single space and in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary manner with the seal of quality of Institut Guttmann. It is a centre that will reach the people who need the most advanced treatments in the world in specialised, intensive and personalised neurorehabilitation, including a programme of cognitive stimulation through the latest technology and the highest level of effectiveness recognised today in the scientific literature.

To do this, it will move to the new GUTTMANN initiative NeuroPersonalClínic® centre which, for some years, has been developing in the hospital, introducing innovative treatments in the field of neurorehabilitation, promoted and developed in many cases by its own team of researchers (noninvasive brain stimulation, cognitive stimulation, treatment of spasticity, neuropathic pain, approach to fibromyalgia, memory clinic, chronic aphasia, diagnosis and treatment of neurogenic dysphagia, diaphragmatic stimulators, new braces etc.).

An initiative that other renowned professionals, with their care teams, would join so the current medical supply would expand to the new challenges in neuroscience and which, according to WHO, are the great medical challenges of our century in addition to spinal cord injury and acquired brain injury (stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumours, etc.); neurodegenerative diseases and rare neurological diseases; fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, focal dystonias; Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in general, both its interdisciplinary therapeutic approach and its prevention; processes included under the name of mental health and behavioural neurology (depression, bipolar disorder, conduct disorder, impairment of memory, of the ability of understanding, communication etc.); and intervention in the psychomotor, cognitive and intellectual development of children.

Finally, the centre, in coordination with the hospital and through its University Institute, will develop a programme of translational research and care innovation aimed at projecting scientific progress in the improvement of brain health and with it the quality of life of people.

It is a social innovation project of Institut Guttmann, which came with the vocation to be an international leader in neuroscience and the desire to contribute to projecting Barcelona and its scientific potential to the world
