Institut Guttmann opened in Barcelona in 1965. It was the first hospital in Spain caring for paraplegic and tetraplegic patients. Subsequently, it began to treat other diseases affecting the central nervous s ystem and causing severe disabilities, particularly cerebrocranial trauma. It is currently housed in a modern and comfortable purpose-designed building of more than 17,000 square metres. This building was opened in 2002 in Badalona (7 km. from Barcelona on the motorway).
These facts add to its organizational culture, its own working method, its commitment to modernity, innovation and quality services, to its educational and research resources, all its employees’ (more than 400 in total) friendliness and likeableness to the more of 16,000 patients treated and to its strong community commitment, to make Institut Guttmann into one of the most advanced hospitals and a world benchmark in its field.
Institut Guttmann - Neurorehabilitation Hospital, which is a part of the National Health System, is acknowledged as a reference hospital by the Health Department of the Regional Government of Catalonia.
 
The Fundación para la Acreditación y Desarrollo Asistencial and the Joint Commission International certify that the centre meet the international health care quality standards for patient care and organization management.
Guttmann Institute has been accredited with the ISO 14,001: 2004.
